The land was granted to E. L. Gage, a graduate of Dartmouth College, who hailed from Vermont. Edward moved to Texas where he established large ranches and began accumulating land for the railroad that was to be built through Marathon. Edwards younger brother Alfred was lured to Texas by the glowing letters
